Koine and Biblical and Medieval Greek • Re: What is a βᾶρις?

It sounds a lot like our word "barge" to me (and the internet confirms). The word is of Egyptian origin, apparently. But why is it also a building? A squat sort of wooden structure could be similar to a barge, I guess. But maybe there is an etymological explanation.
