The Brill “ Etymological Dictionary of Greek” (2010) points to Illyric as the origin of βαρις = stronghold, since Illyric was an idg-language the origine of the root might very well be idg.
The same Dictionary states πυργος to be Pre-Greek, not inherited from idg, but probably origining from Asia-Minor.
